Free trials

How the free trial of a paid plan will work, once Pro and Enterprise go on sale.

Who gets a trial

An organization's first Pro or Enterprise subscription starts with a 30-day free trial. This is true for the monthly and the annual billing period. You do not need a card to start the trial.

Each organization gets one trial. An organization that had a trial gets no second one. An organization that had any subscription, even a canceled one, gets no trial either. Its checkout asks for a card, and Stripe charges it at once.

A checkout that you leave before the end does not use the trial. The trial belongs to the organization, not to you. If you manage two organizations, each one gets its own trial.

Start a trial

When a trial is available, the Billing screen of a Free organization shows Starts with a 30-day free trial. No card is needed to start. above the upgrade buttons. The line is absent when the organization had its trial.

  1. Click Billing in the organization rail.
  2. If the screen shows Monthly and Annual, click the billing period you want. Monthly is selected when the screen opens.
  3. Click Upgrade to Pro or Upgrade to Enterprise. The button reads Opening….
  4. On Stripe's checkout page, finish the checkout. The page asks for no card.
  5. After Stripe returns you to the Billing screen, reload it.

After you return, the screen shows Checkout complete. The plan updates as soon as Stripe confirms it — usually within a minute. Reload to check. After Stripe confirms, the band shows the plan, and the pill reads free trial.

Annual shows only the plans that the server sells annually. The caption under the buttons then reads Billed per member, annually, through Stripe. For the email address that checkout needs, see Plans and billing.

Use a trial code

A trial code gives a trial of its own length, such as 90 days, in place of the 30 days. The product checks the code before it opens Stripe's page. A wrong code never reaches Stripe.

  1. Open the Billing screen.
  2. Click Have a trial code? A field labeled Trial code opens, with the hint Applied when you click Upgrade.
  3. Type the code.
  4. Click Upgrade to Pro or Upgrade to Enterprise.

The product removes spaces before and after the code. An empty field is no code, and the trial is 30 days. When the product refuses a code, the error line shows one of these messages, and the field keeps what you typed:

  • An unknown or expired code: That code is not valid, or it has expired.
  • A code for an organization that had its trial: This organization has already had its free trial, so a trial code cannot be used. The screen shows no code control after the trial, so only a stale screen reaches this message.

During the trial

During the trial the organization has every cap and feature of its plan, and it shows no ads. Stripe charges nothing. The Billing screen shows the pill free trial and a line with the end date, in your own timezone:

The trial ends on 23 Oct 2026. Add a card in the billing portal before then to keep Pro; without one, the organization returns to Free.

To keep the plan, click Manage billing and add a card in Stripe's billing portal. The line does not change after you add a card. It shows until the trial ends.

You can switch between Pro and Enterprise during the trial. The note then reads Moves every seat to Enterprise now. The free trial continues, and nothing is charged before it ends. The trial keeps its end date. See Plans and billing for the switch steps. Members who join during the trial change the seat count. The first charge uses the seat count at the end of the trial.

When the trial ends

A card is on file
Stripe charges the card for the first billing period, a month or a year. The pill then reads active, and the line reads Renews on and the date.
No card is on file
Stripe cancels the subscription, and the organization returns to the Free plan. It keeps every portfolio, Scrum Team, project and member, and the product refuses only growth past the Free caps. The screen shows the upgrade buttons again, with no trial line.
You canceled in the portal during the trial
The pill reads cancelled, and the line names the plan and the date it ends, as in Pro ends on 23 Oct 2026. The plan ends when the trial ends.
